Welcome, newcomer!
Here are some useful tips to ease you into the Wikipedia experience:
- First, take a look at the Wikipedia Tutorial, and perhaps dabble a bit in the test area.
- When you have some free time, take a look at the Manual of Style and Policies and Guidelines. They can come in very handy!
- Remember to use a neutral point of view!
- If you need any help, feel free to post a question at the Help Desk
- Explore, be bold in editing pages, and, most importantly, have fun!
Also, here are some odds and ends that I find useful from time to time:
- Wikipedia:Policy Library
- Wikipedia:Utilities
- Wikipedia:Cite your sources
- Wikipedia:Verifiability
- Wikipedia:Wikiquette
- Wikipedia:Civility
- Wikipedia:Conflict resolution
- Wikipedia:Brilliant prose
- Wikipedia:Pages needing attention
- Wikipedia:Peer review
- Wikipedia:Bad jokes and other deleted nonsense
- Wikipedia:Village pump
- Wikipedia:Boilerplate text
Feel free to ask me anything the links and talk pages don't answer. You can most easily reach me by posting on my talk page.
You can sign your name on any page by typing 4 tildes, likes this: ~~~~.
Best of luck, and have fun!

Please write summaries
[edit]When editing an article on Wikipedia there is a small field labelled "Edit summary" under the main edit-box. It looks like this:
The text written here will appear on the Recent changes page, in the page revision history, on the diff page, and in the watchlists of users who are watching that article. See m:Help:Edit summary for full information on this feature.
When you leave the edit summary blank, some of your edits could be mistaken for vandalism and may be reverted, so please always briefly summarize your edits, especially when you are making subtle but important changes, like changing dates or numbers. Thank you.

"It is often cited as the longest continuous straight corridor in the world."
[edit]If it is "often cited," could you supply one of those citations? I'm personally skeptical... I'd have thought the Pentagon had longer corridors. Anyway, per the verifiability policy, I'm requesting that you supply a published source for this. Dpbsmith (talk) 20:15, 14 March 2006 (UTC)
Degenerate matrix
[edit]Hi Jitse, I couldn't find any reference for zero row or column matrix you mentioned in degenerate matrix. Can you point a definition? Why is it useful? physicistjedi 23:39, 16 March 2006 (UTC)
- If I remember correctly, I saw the one-line article you created, and I thought that it was odd, as I did not remember ever seeing this term. In fact, I thought "degenerate matrix" referred to a matrix with degenerate eigenvalues (eigenvalues with multiplicity greater than 1). However, when looking for references, I could not find any quickly; instead, I found references for the zero rows / columns meaning. Embarrassingly, I don't remember the reference (I didn't write it because degenerate matrix is a disambiguation page, though I now regret this). The only reference I can find now is the first Google hit for "degenerate matrix", which says: "Like all definitions so far, they even work for degenerate matrices with no rows and no columns" [1]. However, it seems the common name is "empty matrix". It is not very important, but useful in the same way as the empty sum and the empty product. There is even an article about it.
- In view of this information, I made degenerate matrix into a redirect to invertible matrix. Thanks for keeping an eye on me! Cheers, Jitse Niesen (talk) 07:25, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit]Hi,
In Talk:İlham Əliyev#Survey on move you write : "As a side note: Safari browser does not show the title properly even in UTF-8 mode, Firefox for Mac does." It is not true. I use Mac OS X and Safari since it exists, and I've never had a problem with such letters as "Ə". The title is perfectly displayed by Safari, by Firefox and by Wikipedia Dashboard. Category renaming
[edit]To rename a category:
- Copy-paste category description to the new location. It's best to list authors of the old category in the edit summary.
- Edit all articles in the category to reflect the rename.
- Delete the old category (requires an admin).
- Move talk page, if any (requires an admin).
These actions are usually done by a bot, but it may take some time (there's some backlog), and everyone's welcome to assist. Conscious 07:37, 15 July 2006 (UTC)

Kaptan-ı Derya and Kaptan Pasha
[edit]Hello Jedi! I am taking the initiative of renaming Kaptan-ı Derya article into Kaptan Pasha. As you can see from the Turkish Naval Forces page here (http://www.dzkk.tsk.mil.tr/english/Tarihce/DonanmaKomutanligi.asp), Kaptan-ı Derya became a pasha shortly after the institution of the rank (as of Fatih), with both terms (Kaptan-ı Derya and Kaptan Pasha) used concurrently afterwards. Kaptan Pasha will make easier read in English, although it is important to also include the historic spelling of Kapudan Pasha. I am opening an article on the full list as well, to be copied from the Turkish wikipedia. Please get back to me if you comments. Cretanforever 11:34, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit]This is an automated message from a robot. You have recently uploaded Image:Afl-logo.jpg. The file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.
As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 12:43, 7 September 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. If you believe you received this message in error, please notify the bot's owner. Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Butun Yort Savullar.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Butun Yort Savullar.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 04:13, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free image (Image:Timur Selcuk 1972.jpg)
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Timur Selcuk 1972.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Motto of the day
[edit]Hello, I notice you're using one of the {{motd}} templates, run by Wikipedia:Motto of the day. You may have noticed that some of the mottos recently have been followed by a date from 2006, or on occasion simply "Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia". The reason for this is that Motto of the day is in some very serious need of help. Participation in the project, which has never been especially high, has dropped considerably over this past summer, to the point we have had several days where no motto was scheduled to appear at all. Over the past several weeks, I've been the only editor scheduling mottos at all, but there aren't enough comments on some of these mottos to justify their use. If we do not get some help - and soon - your daily mottos will stop. In order for us to continue updating these templates for you, we need your help.
When you get a chance between your normal editing, could you stop by our nominations page and leave a few comments on some of the mottos there, especially those that do not have any comments yet? This works very simply; you read a motto, decide whether or not you like it, and post your opinion just below the motto. That's it - no experience required, just an idea of what you personally like and what you feel reflects Wikipedia and its community. If you do have past experience with the project, then please close some of the older nominations once they've got a decent consensus going. There are directions on the nominations page on how to do this.
If you have any questions, please let me know, or post on the project's talk page. I'm looking forward to reading your comments on the suggested mottos, and any additional suggestions you'd like to make. Until then, happy editing! Hersfold (t/a/c) 01:40, 4 September 2008 (UTC)
A petty request
[edit]Hi, and first of all, sorry for bothering you. :) I needed a little translation from a native speaker of Turkish, so I randomly selected you from the category (and you seem like a nice guy according to your user page). :P All I need is an at least rough translation of the lyrics of the song Katula Katula by Davut Güloglu, which can be found here. I'd appreciate it very much if you could write it in English on my talk page or here (wherever suits you). I'm also offering any help you may need with Slavic languages or anything else I can do. Thanks in advance! --iNkubusse? 15:34, 28 September 2008 (UTC)
- Haha, oh my God, I like it so much! Hahaha, it's very catchy and it's exactly the way I perceive Turkish fun (the melody, I think, not the lyrics). :D I already asked a friend who knows some Turkish, but he said 'wtf is this', so I believe the lyrics are really nonsense, but on account of being so damn funky! Thanks a lot my friend, you made my day! :D Cheers! --iNkubusse? 18:17, 28 September 2008 (UTC)

spin
[edit]Ello there, DonaldET3 here.
I hope Physicistjedi is in the mood for English, because that the only language I can read or write.
Anyway, the point of this section: spin. I was just exploring Wikipedia when I came by an article about this thing called a "Hydrogen atom". Looking down the list of nuclide data, I understood everything except the concept of "spin". Just "spin = 1/2+", no units. It appears to be a measurable quantity, but units are required to measure something. The article on "spin" did not help. 1/2 what, hertz? Is this a measurement of time? Can Physicistjedi help me, or is this a chemistry question? DonaldET3 (talk) 20:45, 18 June 2011 (UTC)

The article Devonthink has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- no evidence of notability
While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 18:56, 6 April 2012 (UTC)

Edit-a-thon invite
[edit]Motto of the Day Help Request April 2014
[edit]How many Wikipedia editors does it take to change a lightbulb? One, but anyone can change it back.
Motto of the Day (WP:MOTD) is in a state of emergency and really needs your help! There are not enough editors who are reviewing or nominating mottos at Wikipedia:Motto of the day/Nominations/In review, and this probably means that you will notice a red link or “This space for rent” as our mottos for the next weeks and months.
Please take a moment to review the nominations and nominate your own new mottos at Wikipedia:Motto of the day/Nominations/In review and Wikipedia:Motto of the day/Nominations/'Specials. Any help would be appreciated! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 09:13, 29 April 2014 (UTC)
- This message has been sent by pjoef on behalf of Motto of the Day to all editors of the English Wikipedia who are showing MOTD's templates on their pages, and to all the participants to MOTD: (page, template, and category).

This notification is placed on your talk page because a bot has identified you either as the uploader of the file, or as a contributor to its metadata. It would be appreciated if you could carefully review the information the bot added. To opt out of these notifications, please follow the instructions here. Thanks! Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. For the Election committee, MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 12:52, 23 November 2015 (UTC)

The article Foresight Institute Feynman Prize in Nanotechnology has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
No evidence of notability, despite effort and talk page discussion in the past year. Literally one checkable third-party source and occasional passing mentions. No evidence of third-party coverage of prizes being awarded, beyond press releases. Even in the field, coverage seems largely cursory and passing mentions.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
