Senior senator
[edit]The lead currently says Manchin "became the state's senior U.S. senator when Jay Rockefeller retired in 2015". To my understanding the "senior senator" is the Senator who has been in office the longest, so how does Manchin become the senior Senator straight away? CMD (talk) 05:54, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
- It can be complicated sorting it out.
- Jay Rockefeller was first elected to the WV senate in 1985. He was (by far) the Senior Senator by the time he retired.
- Joe Manchin was first elected to the WV senate in 2010. At that time he was the Junior Senator serving alongside Rockefeller.
- Rockefeller, prior Senior Senator, announced he would retire in 2015.
- Shelley Moore Capito ran for his office and won in the 2014 election. Because she was newly elected to the seat formerly held by Rockefeller, she became the Junior Senator, because Manchin had already been in office for five years, and was thus the Senior Senator.
- It basically comes down to which of the two senators of that state have been in office the longest.
- Hope that's clear. Took me a while to sort through it to write the above... cheers. anastrophe, an editor he is. 06:38, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
- Ah, I see now. I was confused by the order of the lead sentences: I read it as Rockefeller retiring that left a gap for Manchin to become a senator, as it immediately follows a sentence about his pre-senate jobs. Thanks! CMD (talk) 06:45, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
- I've made a small tweak to hopefully clarify this! CMD (talk) 03:08, 28 November 2022 (UTC)

Talk page
[edit]A reminder to editors: This page is for discussion of article improvement. It is also a BLP talk page with specific restrictions due to that characteristic. It is not a page to speculate about the subject's life, or to present leading questions that make implications about the subject of the biography. Editors are expected to be the researchers - if you believe something isn't adequately covered, research first - find sources. Don't guess about motives or reasons. Answer your own question - if you can't find sources that discuss or explain what you're asking about, then asking here is pointless - you're just expecting other editors to do the research for you. cheers. anastrophe, an editor he is. 18:19, 27 April 2023 (UTC)
How does Political positions of Joe Manchin get to be a page?
[edit]How does Political positions of Joe Manchin come to be a Wikipedia page? At first glance, that page looks like stuff which doesn't really add anything. -- M.boli (talk) 21:47, 12 July 2023 (UTC)
Term end
[edit]Just to be clear, waiting until noon is the most pedantic Wikipedia-pilled OCD that doesn't matter when every normal person who will look at any moment at this page won't care about. If folks want to personally handle the influx of nearly 200 new and departing members at 12:01pm at the same time like not opening any ballots until all polls close, then I guess we're subjected to that inanity. Therequiembellishere (talk) 04:13, 3 January 2025 (UTC)
- You don't necessarily have to wait until noon tomorrow, but it's not even midnight on the east coast yet. It's still January 2; y'all can wait a few hours to make the end of term changes to outgoing congress members pages. Davejohnsan (talk) 04:21, 3 January 2025 (UTC)
- There's no substantive difference to editing the dates in 35min versus now, and mass reverting all of them is just a power trip. Therequiembellishere (talk) 04:26, 3 January 2025 (UTC)
- It's a basic principle not to change the end date of an occurrence until the day of. Calling this a "power trip" is hilarious; thanks for the chuckle. Davejohnsan (talk) 04:31, 3 January 2025 (UTC)
- You're welcome, as you are just as welcome to make all the edits changes at noon sharp just as vigorously. 🫡 Therequiembellishere (talk) 04:40, 3 January 2025 (UTC)
- Same applies to you :) Davejohnsan (talk) 04:47, 3 January 2025 (UTC)

- I see you've jumped ahead (by several hours) & updated all the US Senators & I presume US Representatives bios. For the next roughly ten hours, they'll all be inaccurate. GoodDay (talk) 06:00, 3 January 2025 (UTC)
His term doesn't end until Noon EST, 3 January 2025. For goodness sake, what's the big panic about? GoodDay (talk) 05:51, 3 January 2025 (UTC)
Well @Davejohnsan:, considering the number of bios & related pages, in this area. It would be virtually impossible to undo all the premature changes by multiple editors. Usually every two years, a number of editors & IPs make these changes prematurely. Problem is, by the time one completely undoes them? It's almost time to restore them. GoodDay (talk) 06:49, 3 January 2025 (UTC)
- And that is precisely why I stopped editing. I can stand by my principles and take a step back at the same time. Davejohnsan (talk) 07:02, 3 January 2025 (UTC)
